Josef Schulz, Visiting Artist from Dusseldorf in Ein Hod

Josef Schulz was born in 1966 in Poland, to parents of German ancestry. When he was 12 the family moved to Germany, and he finished college studies with a degree in business economics.

1993-1999 he studied at the Dusseldorf Art Academy in the department of photography under the direction of Bernd and Hilla Becher.
1992-2002 he completed his master’s degree in the Academy under the direction of Thomas Roeff.
Since 200 he was awarded numerous prizes and grants.

The works of Josef Schulz were exhibited in numerous one-man and group exhibitions inside and outside of Germany. He visited Israel in 2009 and exhibited at the Dolinger Gallery (that no longer operates).

The influence of photography with a documentary orientation is expressed in his works, as is the use of typology and the influence of Thomas Roeff, who uses the computer to edit and develop the photograph according to his imagination.

Schulz adopted these two approaches and advanced them to new places. His work always begins with the photograph of a place, particularly industrial and commercial buildings, but it distances itself from a direct description of reality. By discarding details and emphasizing basic shapes the images become spectacularly formal, tightened declarations.
